Maritime Training, Workboat Academy, USCG, Mate Program

The Workboat Academy is offered by Houston Marine, a member of the Falck Safety Services. Houston Marine provides training for both civilian and military seafarers from around the globe and are dedicated to helping mariners maintain and advance their certifications, as well as assisting individuals who would like to enter the maritime profession.


The Workboat Mate Program

This program is a two-year vocational program for those with a

strong passion for the maritime industry or mariners who currently hold a 100 or 200 GRT license. The program includes 360 days at sea with a partner company in a billeted position and 26 weeks of classroom time. Upon successful completion of the program and the USCG exam, cadets will obtain a Mate 500 GRT Oceans/1600 GRT, vessels over 100 GRT​/ under 200 GRT - Mate 500 GRT Oceans and Mate 1600 Near Coastal and vessels over 200 GRT - Mate 1600 GRT Oceans. Cadets sailing on offshore supply vessels will obtain an AB-OSV rating after one year. This program is approved by the United States Coast Guard

The Workboat Academy pre screens candidates and matches them with a company apprenticeship.
